Candles: Choosing the Right Candles for Allergy Sensitive Candle Lovers
By. Anne Stewart

There’s nothing better than coming in from the winter’s chill to a warm household rich in the scent of Peppermint Spirits and Cinnamon Sticks, or relaxing on the porch some summer evening to the mellow glow and soothing aroma of Citrus Gardens and Gardenia Blooms. Over the last twenty years, we have become increasing in tune with the spiritual, emotional, and psychological health benefits of candles, and yet there are many people who find themselves deprived of these benefits due to allergies.
The truth is that as candles have gained in popularity, they have fallen in quality.
Many low quality waxes emit pollutants such as soot, acetone, formaldehyde, and benzene into the air of your home. These pollutants can irritate the lungs and respiratory tracts of asthmatics, allergy-sufferers, and children. For this reason, consumers are turning, in increasing numbers, to the benefits of soy candles.
Soy wax is an organic compound that burns cleanly. Research conducted by the American Oil Chemist’s Society has determined that the amount of particulate matter released into the air by soy candles is virtually non-existent when compared to the pollutants expelled by synthetic candles. The gentle impact of soy wax candles on the air in your home makes them far less likely to irritate the allergy sensitive than other wax types. In fact, there are no known health problems associated with burning soy candles.
However, wax is not the only candle component at issue here. The wick’s the thing, wherein we catch the conscience of the candle-maker. Although it has been illegal for several years, candles with lead-cored wicks are still sold in stores. These wicks can actually elevate the level of lead in the air to up to 33 times the normal rate. Make sure the candles you buy contain cotton or hemp wicks, and that these wicks are properly sized and properly trimmed. This greatly reducing the chances that one of your guests will start sneezing over your candles.
Of course, the big issue for many allergy sufferers is scent. But is it really a surprise to anyone to discover that once again it comes down to a matter of quality? Some candles can bring to mind standing in line behind a guy wearing an excess of bargain basement cologne. Low quality candle manufacturers use cheap oils and perfumes that poison the air even for those who don’t normally experience allergies.
Finely-wrought, cotton wicked soy candles like those found in Candles of Eden’s SoyLuscious® product line are far less likely to affect allergy sufferers. This is a direct result of the SoyLuscious® commitment to purity and quality. The all-natural soy wax and premium fragrance blends used in handcrafted SoyLuscious® candles are designed to burn cleanly, and refreshingly, with the allergy sensitive candle lover in mind.
As opposed to the handful of scent options offered by mass-market products, individually handcrafted SoyLuscious® candles are available in eighty different aromatic varieties. This means that even candle lovers who are allergic to most scents will be able to find something suited to their personal needs. Many SoyLuscious® candles are even available in scent-free, dye-free, or essential oil varieties. This is the kind of attention to individual detail one must expect from any high-quality candle manufacturer.
Make sure your next candle-lit dinner party, from first whiff of Lime Cilantro to the Brandied Pear finale, doesn’t end in a sneezing fit. Always select high-quality soy candles that are good for the spirit, good for the mind, and good for the body.
