Candle Ideas
Candle Ideas - Bowl of Candy - Tealight Candle Fall Centerpiece

By. Heather Long

The leaves begin to fade and slip from their perches on trees. Fruits ripen and become more plentiful in the stores. Autumn heralds the end of one flowering season and the beginning of another.. The days grow shorter long before it’s time to shift the clocks and people begin to sport light jackets and sweaters. Ivy blooms in autumn, birds begin their migrations and children return to school and begin to plot their costumes for Halloween.

Autumn is a time of different celebrations and the beginning gauntlet run towards Christmas. Decorating the house is important for people during the seasons, reflecting the natural world with their interior choices. But for many, decorating can also be a bit of a chore. This project is ideal for people who want to do something a little different but don’t want to spend hours trying to get it look just right.

So make a list of your favorite SoyLuscious® autumn scents. For this project, Candy Corn, Pumpkin Spice, Sandalwood, Hot Cinnamon Bun and Nutty Banana Bread are all reminiscent of the chilly autumn nights. Pumpkin Spice and Candy Corn are especially provocative with regard to Halloween, but combined with the rest these are the scents that will fill the air in both October and November.

The SoyLuscious® tea light candles from Candles of Eden are the best for this project, because the scent is strong without being overpowering. The combination of scents is almost as important as the scents themselves. If all the candles are lit, you do not want one to cancel out another.

While you are waiting for your candles to arrive, pay a call on Michael’s or a similar craft store. You’ll want to pick up a few items at minimal cost. The first is decorative sand. I chose two different types. The first is a box that contained a variety of colors: blue, green, yellow, orange, red and brown. I also purchased two slightly larger individual bags of red and taupe. The colors you select will ideally reflect your taste and the season. The blue and green, for example, I just stored away for other projects on another day.

While I was at the craft store, I also picked up a rather inexpensive little baggie of decorative baubles. While they are mostly a cheap plastic synthetic, they are fairly pretty and you can get them in various different colors. You want muted ones, specifically in yellows, reds and oranges in keeping with the autumn theme.

Also while at the craft store I found a couple of decorative pumpkins already pre-set with a few synthetic autumn colored flowers. Since craft stores specializes in these types of items, you shouldn’t have any trouble finding something similar. But follow your own instincts to pick the pieces you would be interested in for your centerpiece or decorative side table.

Once you have all your items, including the candles, you just need to set up a clear, decorative bowl. For this example, I selected a Waterford crystal bowl that usually sits in a cupboard gathering dust. The heavy crystal turned out to be perfect for the exercise.

Step 1: Set up all your supplies so they are readily accessible. Be aware that once you begin adding sand to the bowl, it cannot be ‘unmixed’ and for this exercise, the mix is what you are looking for.

Step 2:  In no particular order, begin to layer the sand into the crystal bowl. I started out with red. You want the depth to be no more than ¼” to ½”. After red, taupe, then orange, yellow, brown, taupe, orange, red and so forth and so on. Keep layering the sand gently, having a care to not actually ‘mix’ the sands yet.

Step 3: Once you have layered the sand to your satisfaction. Clear the area just
around the bowl. The reason the heavy crystal turned out to be so perfect for this is the weight of the bowl itself adds to the control. Spin the bowl, carefully. Make sure that it cannot fly off and break, nor spin so hard as to fling sand out. Spin it two or three times until the sand blend looks ideal.

Step 4: Once the sand is swirled to taste. Place the candles strategically around the sand, balancing color against the setting. Again, select the particular candles for this bowl based on mixtures of scent to taste. This idea can be done for a companion bowl using different candles as well. For this exercise, we’re using a variety of flavors to create the chilly autumn evening atmosphere.

Step 5:  After the candles are in place, scatter the gems about to give it a gleam. The gems are two fold, they add to the effect of the bowl that is lovely even when the candles themselves are not lit. When the candles are lit, the gems add reflective ability

Step 6: Set the bowl where you would like it to be, add accents or not to taste. The final product so resembled a bowl of candy used to favor Trick or Treaters who come knocking, that it now occupies a spot in the front hall near the door.
